After adding the keywords you want to track you add the domains. Now here is where it has an advantage over most of the other tools on the market. You can actually track multiple domains, for example here are 3 sites I am tracking all related to seo training….

… And here is where it gets even better. If you want to track individual pages on other domains such as Youtube, Twitter, or a specific URL, you enter the URLs and the search terms you want to check the ranking for, and it will include these in the ranking checks…

After this you just click the Update Ranking Data button or you can select individual keywords to check. The rank checks are lightning fast and you have the option of checking on Google, Yahoo and Bing, and also whether you want to check broad or phrase match. The results will show you not only the number of pages indexed and PageRank on Google of the domains you are checking…

… but also when you click on the chart icon for any domain you will get to see how it has moved over time.

Now to check where you rank for individual Keywords just click the “Show Keyword Details” button and you will see something like this…

Market Samurai adds Domain tool

One of the things you should know is that other things being equal, an aged domain has more authority and ranking power than a new domain. Also keywords in a domain help it rank for searches that include those keywords, so when choosing to buy a new domain it helps to get one which includes the name of your product, service, or word which you want to be found with.

What I have noticed is that it normally takes around 8-10 months for Google to recognise a new domain properly. This means you may have to wait around 10 months before you notice your rankings significantly improving. Of course domain age is only one factor, but normally you will find that old domains rank better than new domains.

Market Samurai has just added a tool called Domain Samurai, which allows you to search for expiring domains, and sort them by age, PageRank and a number of other factors.

You simply enter the keywords you want and Market Samurai returns a list of available domains… however what you want to do is be able to search for expired domains which have already built up domain age and PageRank.

To view aged domains you will first need to sign up for a DomainFace FREE account.

Once you have done this you will be able to search for expiring domains on the main registrars that sell expiring domains and they include

  • Sedo
  • SnapNames
  • Pool
  • NameJet
  • Flippa
  • GoDaddy

Once you have entered your DomainFace account details you simply enter the keywords you want in your domain, and click “Find domains”. In the results you will be able to see all the domains due to expire in the next month, as well as a lot of important factors that determine how well they will rank, such as number of incoming links on Google, Yahoo and Bing, the domain age, the domain PR (pagerank), the date it is due to expire.

Once you find an expired domain you like just click on the View/Buy link next to it and you get taken directly to the domain registrar. You will need to have an account at the domain registrar to purchase or bid for the expiring domain. Most of them don’t charge to sign up. Expiring domains normally cost around $59 at SnapNames and $69 at Namejet – but if you get more than one bid on a domain you go into an auction and the winning bid will get the domain.

You can also select domain filters, for example you can select only .com. .net and .org domains ….

… and also choose to filter older than 3 years or with a PageRank higher than 2.

The domain variation filter allows you to add prefixes or suffixes to the keywords you have entered so you have a wider range to choose from.

It allows you to start with a domain that already has domain age and high PageRank, something which would normally take you a few years of work and effort to build up. There are people who have found PR6 sites for around $150 ! Normally a PR6 site would sell for well over $1,000.

SEO Keyword Research with Market Samurai

1. Check for synonyms and search volume using Google’s Keyword Tool.
2. For each search term, manually check number of competing web pages.
